The competition design brief was to create contemporary book covers for a selection of Penguin books. The printed covers must be eye-catching within a bookstore environment. Work well on e-commerce sites. While representing the book's narrative in a single design.
Solution
Each book focuses on a strictly typographic and grid system. True Blood blends contrasting colours to represent the thrilling narrative. The disappearing textual pattern highlights the puzzling story of the Clutter family killers. Taking heavy inspiration from Armin Hoffman and the Swiss design style.
The Animal Farm uses a typeface common in the 1950’s when it was released. A minimal design inspired by Russian Avant-Garde art and the design of Russian books of the time period of Soviet Russia. Using the Soviet Union flag colour palette, hinting at the plot's narrative.
The last book is a modern-day story targeted at a teenage audience. Designed with a bold geometric sans-serif to create a contemporary feel. The colour scheme reveals the two genders as they play a dangerous game of noughts and crosses.
